Menai achieve Double Double!

A 5:00am departure from Bangor saw Menai’s team coach make the long journey to South Wales to meet up with the bulk of the squad who had made their own travel arrangements for the Welsh Junior League Plate Final.

From the outset a well balanced team of experienced and debutant athletes were determined to put in a strong performance in defence of their title. With the Spytty Stadium bathed in glorious sunshine for the first few events Menai found themselves trailing last year’s runners-up and consistent title challengers Brecon by around 30 points. As the weather began to take a turn for the worst, Menai had by the midpoint stage, taken a slight lead in the overall standings. With the weather deteriorating quickly and thunder and lightning threatening proceedings our young athletes continued to produce exceptional individual and team performances to stretch their lead over 2015 champions Brecon with Blaenau Gwent a close third. Some excellent team sprinting in the 4x100m relays rounded off the day with Menai’s winning margin at the end of the day having increased to 92 points.

A huge congratulations is extended to all who; competed, managed, coached and supported.

Final Standings:

Menai T&F 998

Brecon AC 906

Blaenau Gwent AC 882

Hereford & County AC 735

Cwmbran Harriers 611

Neath Harriers 596

Llanelli AC 472

Barry & Vale Harriers 424

The last two seasons have represented the most successful period ever for our junior track and field athletes. In 2016 the club’s junior team achieved a historic double by winning promotion from Div 3 of YDL (Lower) league as well as being the first North Wales club to lift the Welsh Junior League Plate trophy. The phenomenal success achieved last year has again been replicated in 2017 by gaining promotion from Div 2 of the YDL (Lower) league and retaining their Welsh Junior League Plate trophy to secure a remarkable double double!

The team’s achievements are something that all involved with the club be they; athletes, coaches, officials or parents should be extremely proud of. In the end, success fundamentally comes down to hard work, determination and personal sacrifice.

The current team managers, who have had to make many unenviable and difficult selection decisions over the course of their tenure, wish to thank all the athletes who have given their all for the club, and also to the many officials and parents who have provided all too willing assistance and support over the last few years. Whilst it has been a difficult undertaking at times, it has ultimately been a rewarding experience particularly in seeing our younger members developing into accomplished athletes. We wish the succeeding administrators, whoever they may be, the greatest success in 2018 and beyond.

Keith and Danielle
